Algorithms of Late-capitalism: The Game

How can we imagine a future with technology that is open, diverse, and fair, rather than simply following the limited ideas of big tech companies?

This is the question that came to life at Techniek College Rotterdam. Here, first-year ICT system engineer students played the “Algorithms of Late-capitalism: The Game”, developed by research and design studio internet teapot. The session was guided by Adriaan Odendaal (researcher in Societal Impact of AI at the Erasmus University Rotterdam) and Karla Zavala Barreda (researcher at University of Amsterdam). It was part of the Sociaal AI Lab Rotterdam initiative, which focuses on involving Rotterdam citizens in shaping responsible technology.

Exploring the topic of citizenship, the session aimed to strengthen critical thinking around societal challenges. “Algorithms of Late-capitalism: The Game” supported this by making complex ideas about AI and society more accessible and engaging. It invited students to reflect on the broader impact of technology and on their own role in shaping society.

Through a game-based approach, students explored how technology and algorithms influence everyday life. The game encouraged BBL students to actively reflect on their position as (future) professionals. It also explored how they can contribute to more fair and human-centered technological developments.

The accessible setup created space for open discussion, collaboration, and the exchange of real-world experiences. It supported students in developing skills such as critical reflection, argumentation, and perspective-taking.

Thank you to all students for your energy, ideas, and creativity! Imagining a better technological future together was truly inspiring. 🚀
