The Erasmus Data Collaboratory is an open environment where we welcome students, researchers, faculty, and industry professionals to collaborate on innovative projects, and learn about the latest advancements in data, analytics, machine learning and AI. Situated on the campus of Erasmus University Rotterdam, it serves as a space where the entire data science cycle can take place, from data engineering to data visualisation.

Province of South Holland Visit

Representatives from the Province of Zuid-Holland visited Erasmus University Rotterdam for an interactive program hosted by the ECDA in the Erasmus Data Collaboratory. They explored how data and digital innovation drive the Smart and Sustainable Campus 2030 vision. Read more about the event here!

Food innovation academy visit

A workshop for the Food Innovation Academy where education meets digital innovation in the food sector! Educators and industry experts explored how data and digitalisation are transforming the food industry. The workshop showcased innovations in 3D printing, robotics, and immersive VR learning. VOKA visit

We hosted Flandres’ largest entrepreneurship network (VOKA) for an inspiring session on the future of digital transformation. Guests explored the new EnergySHR platform, discussed leadership in the age of AI, and experienced the power of immersive technologies in areas such as urban planning and climate resilience. Hub on campus at Erasmus University Rotterdam

The Data Collaboratory is located in the Polak building on the Erasmus University Woudestein Campus. It includes:

  • a data lab, equipped with high-quality workstations with high-resolution displays, connected to a cloud infrastructure through fast connections.
  • a local data and AI sandbox, consisting of two compute clusters with the latest nVidia GPU’s for developing and running AI models
  • a visualization space, with advanced digital projection facilities
  • a multimedia-equipped boardroom
  • project and meeting rooms, that are well-equipped with creative and stimulating tools to support research and education

Creating positive societal impact

One of the primary aims of the Erasmus Data collaboratory is to foster collective creativity to create societal impact, by bringing together students, academics, public and private partners and startups/scale-ups to work on complex societal challenges, while using the power of data and AI. Examples are the energy transition, resilient deltas, our health system, creating smart and inclusive cities. These issues, all related to contributing to the United Nations SDGs are usually complex, messy and hard to resolve, demanding creative, systemic and divergent design challenge approaches.
Every design challenge involves facilitators, highly experienced coaches who act as lead learners and guardians of the collaboratory space, as well as subject matter experts, who are responsible for providing relevant knowledge and contributing to the discussion in a relevant and pertinent matter.
