We are thrilled to announce that we have signed the Open Urban Platform collaboration covenant! 🚀

Last Wednesday, on behalf of Erasmus University Rotterdam, our Executive Director Marcel van Oosterhout officially signed the collaboration agreement during the launch of the Open Urban Platform in Rotterdam. This marks a significant step toward urban digitalization, as we work alongside Gemeente Rotterdam, Future Insight Group, and other partners to shape the future of Rotterdam and its residents.

The Open Urban Platform (OUP) is a digital ecosystem of Rotterdam, designed to connect data, applications, and stakeholders, fostering smarter, more sustainable urban living by using the Digital Twin concept. By promoting collaboration and data integration, the platform empowers cities and organizations to address challenges such as climate action, mobility, and public health with innovative solutions.

We are proud to have played a key role in the development of this project. Over the past 7 years, we’ve collaborated with the Digital City program, contributing research on governance, business models, trust-building, and innovation ecosystems. Through partnerships like the EU RUGGEDIZED project and the Future Society Lab, and with the involvement of over 40 master students, we’ve laid the groundwork for this transformative platform. One of the outcomes has been the development of a governance board to ensure the platform’s transparency, accountability, and long-term success. Our Academic Director at ECDA, Haydee Sheombar, is a member of this board.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to further integrate the OUP into our Immersive Xperience Lab, where we plan to:
– Prepare future generations by engaging students and researchers with digital tools and data-driven solutions.
– Visualize challenges and opportunities through a Digital Twin of Rotterdam and beyond, addressing issues like climate resilience.
– Foster innovation and collaboration by developing applications and contributing research data.
– Drive innovation by leveraging AI and XR/metaverse to explore opportunities and enhance citizen engagement.
– Advance societal impact research, focusing on citizen adoption and solutions to grand challenges.

🌱 Signing this covenant reinforces our commitment to the Open Urban Platform as a collaborative effort to tackle Rotterdam’s climate resilience challenges. By endorsing principles of interoperability, openness, and social value, we ensure the platform remains shareable and scalable and fosters cooperation. Together, we aim to co-create a future-ready city through innovation and data-driven solutions for sustainable urban living.
