Around 25 professionals from 7 organisations completed the Leadership Challenges with Data Analytics programme of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) in January 2020. In the bi-annual holistic training programme, offered by the Erasmus Centre for Data Analytics, they acquired new knowledge and diverse skills related to data analytics, which led to fresh insights that can drive new value creation opportunities in their organisations.

The programme plays a key role in the organisational change towards becoming a data-driven organisation, as organisations discover how to approach this challenge by doing while working on a company use case.

Five teams with professionals from ING, Siemens, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Quint Wellington Redwood, Stedin, VIVAT and Gemeente Rotterdam worked on their own use cases through a learning-by-doing approach from peers and via coaching by top academics and business experts. The team members learned to apply data analytics technologies and AI, improved their business and communication skills, and boosted their understanding of privacy, security, ethics and accountability.

Winning data analytics project

“For every organisation, both public and private, RSM’s Leadership Challenge is an amazing opportunity to work on data analytics with outstanding professors in order to become a data native organisation,” said Robin Kroonenberg, chief digitalization officer at Siemens Nederland N.V. He added: “The Leadership Challenge in Data Analytics provided the Siemens team with the right tools and coaching to create the winning data analytics project.”

The teams presented their results on Friday 17 January. The Siemens team had worked on a use case in the context of maintenance of equipment. The team won because of its systematic business process approach, the clever use of data and analytics and the excellent visualization of the results. Runner-up was the innovative Gemeente Rotterdam team that gave co-creation tools for urban design to the citizens.

The jury consisted of Professors Eric van Heck and Peter Vervest, and associate professors Dr Jan van Dalen and Dion Bongaerts from RSM and Mireille van Kol, managing partner at Quint and Ulla Kruhse-Lehtonen, CEO at DAIN in Helsinki.
