SUMMARY:ECDA Leadership Challenge Spring 2022
DESCRIPTION:The use of data and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will without any doubt change the waywe will do business in the future. As a matter of fact\, today it is already changing businesses\,governmental organizations\, and educational institutions. But what is needed to make ArtificialIntelligence a valuable part of the way we do business ourselves? Many experts believe thatsuccessful Artificial Intelligence applications hinge on the so-called b-smaCt technologies(Blockchain\, Social media\, Mobile use\, Analytics\, Cloud and Things-on-the-internet or better knownas IoT). The fuelling component of those technologies is Big Data. This insight will require a wholenew set of skills and ways of working. Understanding and working with new technologies for bigdata collection\, analysis and prediction will not create only huge societal and business opportunities\,but also ethical\, legal\, privacy and technical issues concerning every part of the organization. It willinfluence customer relationships\, redefines how organizations develop new products and services\,changes how operations are organized and managed\, and provides the basis for new businessmodels and service offerings. It will demand a data driven focus of everyone involved in theorganization. \n\n\n\nThis training programme combines the science of business\, data\, and societal perspectives.Participants – who usually join with a team of 3 to 6 persons – acquire a broad knowledge and diverseskills related to data analytics\, which may lead to new insights that drive new value creationopportunities. Such learning by doing manifests itself along two dimensions: across multiple levels(individual\, group\, and corporate) and across multiple functions. \n\n\n\nSpecific dates to be announced!

SUMMARY:ECDA Leadership Challenge Higher Education (April pilot edition)
DESCRIPTION:This edition is FULLY BOOKED! Join our September edition instead! \n\n\n\nThe use of data and application of analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) will without any doubt change the way we design and operate our Higher Education. As a matter of fact\, today it is already changing our educational institutions. But what is needed to make analytics and AI valuable parts of the way we organize our education? Many experts believe that the successful transformation of our Higher Education hinges on five pillars: strategy\, hr and culture\, organisation\, governance and compliance\, ICT. \n\n\n\nThis insight will require a whole new set of skills and ways of working. Understanding and working with new technologies for (big) data collection\, analysis and prediction will not create only huge opportunities\, but also ethical\, legal\, privacy and technical issues concerning every part of the organization. It will influence the relationship with our students\, redefine how new programs and services are developed\, change how operations are managed\, and provide the basis for new service offerings. It will demand a data-driven focus of everyone involved in the organization. \n\n\n\nThis training programme combines the science of business\, data\, and societal perspectives. Participants – who usually join with a team of 3 to 5 persons – acquire a broad knowledge and diverse skills related to data analytics\, which may lead to new insights that drive new value creation opportunities in the context of higher education. SUMMARY:Eat Your Discipline: Cultural Economics & Digitalization
DESCRIPTION:A monthly lunch conversation on the future of social sciences \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy is the cultural economics discipline interested in digital innovation and what does it bring to the study of these innovations\, such as blockchain? Join us for this month’s Eat Your Discipline where we discuss the future of Cultural Economics and Digitalization together with dr. Christian Handke\, prof. Jason Potts and dr. Mariangela Lavanga and alumnus Pablo Pérez Le Maignan.  \n\n\n\nDuring this monthly lunch series\, we assess the current state of different disciplines and question how these have and can contribute to tackling complex societal challenges. Cultural economics is a discipline that apply economic analysis to the arts and cultural industries. It aims at a better understanding of the economic\, business\, social and policy aspects related to the arts and culture. In recent times digitalization has brought a lot of new opportunities to the cultural and creative sector\, but how do cultural economists study digital innovations and what is their contribution?   \n\n\n\nA disciplinary panel consisting of dr. Christian Handke (Associate Professor of Cultural Economics\, ESHCC) and Distinguished Professor Jason Potts (Co-Director\, RMIT Blockchain Innovation Hub\, RMIT University) will discuss the future of the cultural economics discipline. Pablo Pérez Le Maignan graduated from the masters in Cultural Economics last year. Their conversation will be moderated by dr. Mariangela Lavanga (Associate Professor of Cultural Economics and Entrepreneurship\, ESHCC and DIT academic). Join the conversation to share your thoughts!  \n\n\n\nDigital Innovation\, Blockchain and NFTs \n\n\n\nDr. Christian Handke is Associate professor of Cultural Economics at ESHCC\, President of the Society for Economic Research on Copyright Issues (SERCI) and Executive Board member of the Association of Cultural Economics International (ACEI). He will discuss the economics of copyright\, innovation and technological change in the cultural industries. Distinguished professor Jason Potts is director of the RMIT Blockchain Innovation Hub\, the world’s first research centre on the social science of blockchain. He will discuss what social sciences\, in particular cultural economics\, can bring to the research on blockchain and how blockchain could reshape the future of the creative industries. MA Cultural Economics & Entrepreneurship alumnus Pablo Pérez Le Maignan wrote a thesis on NFTs market and blockchain last year and will share his view on how students are being prepared to contribute to tackling complex societal challenges after graduating. Dr. Mariangela Lavanga researches and teaches on cultural and creative industries\, with a focus on sustainability transition in the fashion and textile industry with active stakeholders’ engagement.   \n\n\n\nSigning up\n\n\n\nThis lunch session is a great opportunity for (cultural) economics students and academics to discuss societal challenges and what it means to look at them within this discipline. If you’re not yet familiar with cultural economics\, moderator Mariangela will start with a brief introduction to make sure everyone is able to follow along. Sign up below to receive the zoom link for the event.   \n\n\n\nWould you like to critically discuss your own discipline? Please reach out to dit@eur.nl.

SUMMARY:AI education for ICT dummies?
DESCRIPTION:A webinar on teaching AI to non-ICT students (MBO\, HBO\, WO) \n\n\n\n\n\nArtificial intelligence is increasingly present in society and consequently in the curricula of numerous programmes\, including the non-technical. But how do you convey a technological subject to students who have not chosen for an ICT programme? How do you inspire and motivate a public that has no intrinsic interest in AI? In this webinar João Ferreira Goncalves will tackle these questions and guide teachers who are involved in teaching AI and data technology to non-ICT students. \n\n\n\nThis webinar is organised by the AI\, data & digitalisation Convergence group of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. It is a contribution to the month of AI in education and aims to engage teachers with the topic of AI. \n\n\n\nAbout Convergence AI\, data & digitalisation:\n\n\n\nTU Delft\, Leiden University\, Erasmus MC and Erasmus University Rotterdam join forces in ConvergenceOpens external. The urgent and complex societal challenges of our time ask for fundamentally new forms of cooperation\, whereby the boundaries between institutes and disciplines are crossed to create new perspectives and solutions.

SUMMARY:ECDA Insights Social Artificial Intelligence #6
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Max Welz  \n\n\n\nTitle: “Identifying Periods of Careless Responding in Surveys: A Deep Learning Approach” \n\n\n\nAbstract: Rating-scale datasets collected from surveys are paramount to empirical research. However\, due to deficiencies in survey design or lack of motivation\, some respondents may not comply with the instructions of the survey’s questions. This phenomenon is known as careless responding. Careless responding has been identified as a major threat to the internal validity of survey-based studies and should therefore be screened for (Huang et al.\, 2015). Existing methods for detecting careless responses are designed to identify respondents who respond carelessly throughout the survey. However\, recent work suggests that the longer a survey takes\, the higher the likelihood that a large proportion of all respondents will eventually start responding carelessly (Bowling et al.\, 2021). Thus\, we are interested in identifying when a respondent becomes careless (if at all) rather than trying to detect respondents who respond carelessly throughout the survey. Correspondingly\, we propose a novel method for identifying the periods of carelessness (or a lack thereof) of each respondent. The proposed method uses the deep learning technique of auto-associative neural networks (autoencoders) in combination with response times. By means of extensive numerical experiments\, we find that our proposed method achieves high reliability in correctly identifying periods of careless responding and discriminates well between careless and regular respondents. Our method seems to perform particularly well in long surveys\, which are common in psychology and health sciences\, where it is likely that a large proportion of all respondents eventually respond carelessly due to fatigue.

SUMMARY:Grip on AI: How mature is your organization?
DESCRIPTION:Within this exploration\, we investigate how an AI ethics maturity model can help you gain a grip on AI and ethics within your organization. How is your institution doing when it comes to awareness and culture\, proper AI governance\, and more. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n📅 March 21\, 2024⏰ 14:30 – 16:00📍 Online \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPilot\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSURF will facilitate a guided ‘pilot’ with this maturity model during 2024\, in which we want to explore how tools such as these can contribute to the responsible use of AI within the sector. We organize this in collaboration with EDSA and Erasmus Center for Data Analytics (ECDA). We hope to do an informal ‘self-assessment’ with a diverse group of institutions\, to see what works and what doesn’t\, and to learn from each other. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\nKick-off: we introduce the maturity model and the exploration\, will you join us? \n\n\n\n\n\nInformation session for participants: we will discuss further about how you can best approach this. And we make agreements about the mutual exchange of information. This meeting will take place on April 2 from 10 am to 11 am via Teams.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSelf-assessment: you work within your institution to do a self-assessment \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeedback: we discuss the results and experiences with each other. And we will discuss possible next steps.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFor whom?\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe pilot exploration of the maturity model for AI ethics is aimed at institutional staff who are involved in the governance of new technologies and applications within the institution. And is therefore interesting for information managers\, privacy officers\, data protection officers\, enterprise architects\, and policy officers. \n\n\n\nDay Program\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nIntroduction & general Responsible AI at SURF (10 min) \n\n\n\n\n\nExplanation of the AI ethics maturity model (15 min) \n\n\n\n\n\nSharing experiences through the AI@EUR program (15 min) \n\n\n\n\n\nDiscussion & questions (20 min) \n\n\n\n\n\nBreak (5 min)? \n\n\n\n\n\nExplanation of the pilot (15 min)  \n\n\n\n\n\nDiscussion and questions (10 min) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n \n Register
