SUMMARY:Conference and Expo 2021: Recharge Earth
DESCRIPTION:View event website & tickets\n\n\n\n\nReduce – Renew – Rethink\n\n\n\nEnergy transition is an important topic. Not only for governments\, companies\, knowledge institutions and service providers\, but for society as a whole. The ambitions and objectives have been defined\, but they still need to take shape. The question is how? How will we achieve (inter)national climate goals? And how do we utilize the economic opportunities that come with it? \n\n\n\nTo answer these questions Rotterdam Ahoy is initiating the Recharge Earth platform which focuses on three topics: reduce\, renew and rethink. In other words\, how can we reduce our climate footprint and reform the current energy system?Recharge Earth brings relevant parties in the field of energy supply and energy transition together\, to further the dialogue between the different thinkers and doers. Because the ultimate goal is to take coordinated action. Achieving objectives and exchange of knowledge will be at the centre.   \n\n\n\nTogether towards a new energy system \n\n\n\nThe energy transition requires a different system approach. The current energy system with its dominant\, large companies and separate economic sectors is no longer sufficient. The challenges are too complex for that. In the new energy system\, consumers can also be producers\, and vice versa. On a large scale\, or on a small scale. Moreover\, balancing supply and demand remains a brain teaser. If you want to design the energy transition successfully and efficiently\, you need to look for a more connected system\, in which relevant stakeholders collaborate much more\, across borders\, in order to jointly achieve sustainable\, integrated solutions. Recharge Earth brings those parties together and inspires to action.  \n\n\n\nRecharge Earth offers one platform that connects all relevant parties. Governments\, network operators\, energy suppliers\, consumers\, knowledge institutions\, innovation hubs\, service providers\, civil society organizations and other stakeholders share knowledge and experiences in order to come up with concrete solutions. Innovation\, practical knowledge exchange\, decisiveness and cooperation will be vital in this. \n\n\n\nTogether we will work on a new energy system!  \n\n\n\nPartners\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe platform\n\n\n\nRecharge Earth is committed to contribute to realizing (inter)national climate goals. By connecting all relevant stakeholders and by sharing knowledge we will be able to find solutions for this global challenge together. We will use different channels to support this. The Recharge Earth platform consists of: \n\n\n\nThe annual Recharge Earth congressRecharge Earth side events: to achieve goals faster initiatives are bundled under the Recharge Earth label for more cohesion. The website where various publications can be found\, such as news items\, whitepapers & best practicesSocial media where knowledge and news are shared\n\n\n\nRecharge Earth congress – March 10 and 11\, 2021\n\n\n\nAn important part of Recharge Earth is the annual congress\, of which the first edition will take place on March 10 and 11\, 2021.  \n\n\n\nThe aim of the congress is to make an active contribution to achieving climate goals and capitalizing on relevant economic opportunities. The conference is set up around a concrete energy challenge: the development of sustainable regions while maintaining and further expanding the economy.  \n\n\n\nTarget audience\n\n\n\nThe energy transition involves complex issues that cannot be solved individually. Only by bringing various groups of stakeholders together\, the new energy system can take shape successfully. Recharge Earth focuses on knowledge exchange between all parties that play a role in the energy transition: \n\n\n\nGovernments: central government\, provinces\, municipalitiesCompanies: energy producers\, network operators\, energy usersKnowledge centres: educational institutions\, research institutes\, innovation hubsService providers: financial\, technical\, legalNon-profit: industry associations\, social organizations\, residents\n\n\n\nIngredients\n\n\n\n1\,000 participants50 exhibitors2 days40 presentations\, workshops and best practices4 plenary timeslotsSite visits\n\n\n\nKey themes\n\n\n\nRecharge Earth offers a challenging program focusing on the following topics: \n\n\n\nFuture energy demand: trends in the industry\, the environment and thegreenhouse horticulture. What is the influence of electrification\, innovation and energy saving?Future energy supply: various renewable energy sources\, such as solar energy\, geothermal and residual heat\, biomass and hydrogen. What is the influence of technology\, innovation and cost reduction? How do we balance the future energy supply with the energy demand? Which infrastructure belongs to a new energy system and how does the role of the involved parties change? How do we keep the new energy system reliable\, affordable\, acceptable and safe?\n\n\n\nThink of regulations\, financing\, education and the labour market\, the use of public space and the needed support of the society.  \n\n\n\nJoin as a sponsor!\n\n\n\nAre you an energy producer\, grid operator\, energy user\, policy maker\, researcher\, energy expert\, service provider\, working for a social organization or involved in some other way in the energy transition? Do you believe in the power of collaboration and do you want to connect your name to Recharge Earth? Register as a sponsor and choose one of the four packages which best suits you.  \n\n\n\nRecharge Earth 2021 Advisory board\n\n\n\nThe Recharge Earth Advisory Board helps us to achieve our objectives by contributing their knowledge\, expertise and experience. SUMMARY:Digital for the People - it's more than just tech
DESCRIPTION:Curious about what digital transition means for cities and their citizens? Then join this interactive session to explore how cities can enable it for their development and COVID-19 recovery. Hear from cities what digital transition is all about and what it looks like in practice. Whether you are a cutting-edge smart city or just starting your digital journey\, you can still learn what’s needed to enhance or start digital transition at city level\, and how this works in different contexts and policy areas. \n\n\n\nSession led by URBACT and the city of Valencia. \n\n\n\nFurther\, as part of the EU smart city project RUGGEDISED and in collaboration with the EU SCC-network of smart city projects and the EIP Smart Cities marketplace\, the Erasmus University Rotterdam researched and gathered data from more than 100 respondents in 80 European cities\, most municipality staff responsible for urban data platform development\, and 85% were partners in one of the EU SCC Lighthouse projects\, funded by the European Commission. The study concluded in mid-January 2020.  The study analysed the stage of development on urban data platforms; the vision behind these platforms; the business and technology design; the implementation barriers and accelerators\, and the use and impact of these platforms. This presentation provides the highlights of this study and especially touches upon the human role in achieving value from urban data.

SUMMARY:ECDA Insights Social Artificial Intelligence #1
DESCRIPTION:Learning Fair and Interpretable Rules Based on Linear Programming by Hakan Akyuz   \n\n\n\nThis talk being part of the Social Impact of AI expert practice makes an introduction to the concepts of interpretability and fairness in machine learning. We introduce two algorithms for interpretability and fairness based on using rule sets. Rules embody a set of if-then statements which include one or more conditions to classify a subset of samples in a dataset. In various applications\, such classification rules are considered interpretable by the decision-makers. Fairness is usually built upon interpretability and needs to be simultaneously integrated within it. Both algorithms take advantage of linear programming (LP)\, and hence\, they are scalable to large data sets. \n\n\n\nThe first algorithm extracts rules for the interpretation of trained models that are based on tree/rule ensembles. The second algorithm generates a set of classification rules through a column generation approach. The proposed algorithms return a set of rules along with their optimal weights indicating the importance of each rule for classification. Fairness requires additional conditions to be imposed on the LPs and restricts the set of rules generated. This boils down to obtaining a fair subset of rules in the end. \n\n\n\nOur algorithms allow assigning cost coefficients\, which could relate to different attributes of the rules\, such as rule lengths\, estimator weights\, number of false negatives\, discrimination ratio and so on. Thus\, the decision-makers can adjust these coefficients and constraints to divert the training process and obtain a set of rules that are more appealing for their needs. We have tested the performances of our algorithms on a collection of datasets. \n\n\n\nOur results show that a good compromise between interpretability and accuracy can be obtained by the proposed algorithms. We have more promising outcomes for fairness compared to a state-of-the-art approach on average.

SUMMARY:ECDA Leadership Challenge Spring 2022
DESCRIPTION:The use of data and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will without any doubt change the waywe will do business in the future. As a matter of fact\, today it is already changing businesses\,governmental organizations\, and educational institutions. But what is needed to make ArtificialIntelligence a valuable part of the way we do business ourselves? Many experts believe thatsuccessful Artificial Intelligence applications hinge on the so-called b-smaCt technologies(Blockchain\, Social media\, Mobile use\, Analytics\, Cloud and Things-on-the-internet or better knownas IoT). The fuelling component of those technologies is Big Data. This insight will require a wholenew set of skills and ways of working. Understanding and working with new technologies for bigdata collection\, analysis and prediction will not create only huge societal and business opportunities\,but also ethical\, legal\, privacy and technical issues concerning every part of the organization. It willinfluence customer relationships\, redefines how organizations develop new products and services\,changes how operations are organized and managed\, and provides the basis for new businessmodels and service offerings. It will demand a data driven focus of everyone involved in theorganization. \n\n\n\nThis training programme combines the science of business\, data\, and societal perspectives.Participants – who usually join with a team of 3 to 6 persons – acquire a broad knowledge and diverseskills related to data analytics\, which may lead to new insights that drive new value creationopportunities. Such learning by doing manifests itself along two dimensions: across multiple levels(individual\, group\, and corporate) and across multiple functions. \n\n\n\nSpecific dates to be announced!

SUMMARY:ECDA Insights FinTech
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Blockchain and Tokens by Dr. Dion Bongaerts\, Associate Professor of Finance at RSM Erasmus University and Academic Director Fintech at the Erasmus Center for Data Analytics. \n\n\n\nFollowing the global financial crisis\, Bitcoin saw the light of day\, giving rise to a revolutionary payment system based on trust in technology rather than trust in institutional parties like banks. While there are ample features of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies that make them less suitable for an everyday means of payment\, the technology behind them\, blockchain\, offers ample opportunities for new business models and market infrastructures. One can think about handling securities transactions\, but also about creating digital twins of digital and real world objects. This talk starts with a short outline of what a blockchain is and why it works. We will also shortly introduce tokens. In the second half of the talk\, several initiatives regarding research\, teaching\, and public private partnerships regarding blockchains are highlighted.

SUMMARY:ECDA Insights Social Artificial Intelligence #3
DESCRIPTION:Non-linear dimensionality reduction methods for large\, high dimensional datasets. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Prof. Boudewijn Lelieveldt (TU Delft) \n\n\n\nAbout the seminar \n\n\n\n\n\nThis presentation discusses novel visual analytics and non-linear dimensionality reduction techniques for large\, high-dimensional datasets. Focusing on the non-linear embedding technique tSNE\, we developed Dual tSNE and linked-view tSNE to enable fast and interactive identification of clusters and functionally interesting feature sets. Moreover\, we developed spatially mapped tSNE that integrates spatial image information in the tSNE map analysis. Finally\, we developed Hierarchical Stochastic Neighbor Embedding\, which scales to millions of data points while preserving the manifold structure of the full dataset. Applications of these techniques will be highlighted in three application domains: 1) analysis of hyperspectral imaging data 2) linked analysis of spatio-temporal gene expression data\, and 3) HDPS: a generic plugin system for fast and interactive analysis of high-dimensional data.

SUMMARY:ECDA Leadership Challenge Higher Education (April pilot edition)
DESCRIPTION:This edition is FULLY BOOKED! Join our September edition instead! \n\n\n\nThe use of data and application of analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) will without any doubt change the way we design and operate our Higher Education. As a matter of fact\, today it is already changing our educational institutions. But what is needed to make analytics and AI valuable parts of the way we organize our education? Many experts believe that the successful transformation of our Higher Education hinges on five pillars: strategy\, hr and culture\, organisation\, governance and compliance\, ICT. \n\n\n\nThis insight will require a whole new set of skills and ways of working. Understanding and working with new technologies for (big) data collection\, analysis and prediction will not create only huge opportunities\, but also ethical\, legal\, privacy and technical issues concerning every part of the organization. It will influence the relationship with our students\, redefine how new programs and services are developed\, change how operations are managed\, and provide the basis for new service offerings. It will demand a data-driven focus of everyone involved in the organization. \n\n\n\nThis training programme combines the science of business\, data\, and societal perspectives. Participants – who usually join with a team of 3 to 5 persons – acquire a broad knowledge and diverse skills related to data analytics\, which may lead to new insights that drive new value creation opportunities in the context of higher education. Such learning by doing manifests itself along two dimensions: across multiple levels (individual\, group) and across multiple functions

SUMMARY:Eat Your Discipline: Cultural Economics & Digitalization
DESCRIPTION:A monthly lunch conversation on the future of social sciences \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy is the cultural economics discipline interested in digital innovation and what does it bring to the study of these innovations\, such as blockchain? Join us for this month’s Eat Your Discipline where we discuss the future of Cultural Economics and Digitalization together with dr. Christian Handke\, prof. Jason Potts and dr. Mariangela Lavanga and alumnus Pablo Pérez Le Maignan.  \n\n\n\nDuring this monthly lunch series\, we assess the current state of different disciplines and question how these have and can contribute to tackling complex societal challenges. Cultural economics is a discipline that apply economic analysis to the arts and cultural industries. It aims at a better understanding of the economic\, business\, social and policy aspects related to the arts and culture. In recent times digitalization has brought a lot of new opportunities to the cultural and creative sector\, but how do cultural economists study digital innovations and what is their contribution?   \n\n\n\nA disciplinary panel consisting of dr. Christian Handke (Associate Professor of Cultural Economics\, ESHCC) and Distinguished Professor Jason Potts (Co-Director\, RMIT Blockchain Innovation Hub\, RMIT University) will discuss the future of the cultural economics discipline. Pablo Pérez Le Maignan graduated from the masters in Cultural Economics last year. Their conversation will be moderated by dr. Mariangela Lavanga (Associate Professor of Cultural Economics and Entrepreneurship\, ESHCC and DIT academic). Join the conversation to share your thoughts!  \n\n\n\nDigital Innovation\, Blockchain and NFTs \n\n\n\nDr. Christian Handke is Associate professor of Cultural Economics at ESHCC\, President of the Society for Economic Research on Copyright Issues (SERCI) and Executive Board member of the Association of Cultural Economics International (ACEI). He will discuss the economics of copyright\, innovation and technological change in the cultural industries. Distinguished professor Jason Potts is director of the RMIT Blockchain Innovation Hub\, the world’s first research centre on the social science of blockchain. He will discuss what social sciences\, in particular cultural economics\, can bring to the research on blockchain and how blockchain could reshape the future of the creative industries. MA Cultural Economics & Entrepreneurship alumnus Pablo Pérez Le Maignan wrote a thesis on NFTs market and blockchain last year and will share his view on how students are being prepared to contribute to tackling complex societal challenges after graduating. Dr. Mariangela Lavanga researches and teaches on cultural and creative industries\, with a focus on sustainability transition in the fashion and textile industry with active stakeholders’ engagement.   \n\n\n\nSigning up\n\n\n\nThis lunch session is a great opportunity for (cultural) economics students and academics to discuss societal challenges and what it means to look at them within this discipline. If you’re not yet familiar with cultural economics\, moderator Mariangela will start with a brief introduction to make sure everyone is able to follow along. Sign up below to receive the zoom link for the event.   \n\n\n\nWould you like to critically discuss your own discipline? Please reach out to dit@eur.nl.

SUMMARY:AI education for ICT dummies?
DESCRIPTION:A webinar on teaching AI to non-ICT students (MBO\, HBO\, WO) \n\n\n\n\n\nArtificial intelligence is increasingly present in society and consequently in the curricula of numerous programmes\, including the non-technical. But how do you convey a technological subject to students who have not chosen for an ICT programme? How do you inspire and motivate a public that has no intrinsic interest in AI? In this webinar João Ferreira Goncalves will tackle these questions and guide teachers who are involved in teaching AI and data technology to non-ICT students. \n\n\n\nThis webinar is organised by the AI\, data & digitalisation Convergence group of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. It is a contribution to the month of AI in education and aims to engage teachers with the topic of AI. \n\n\n\nAbout Convergence AI\, data & digitalisation:\n\n\n\nTU Delft\, Leiden University\, Erasmus MC and Erasmus University Rotterdam join forces in ConvergenceOpens external. The urgent and complex societal challenges of our time ask for fundamentally new forms of cooperation\, whereby the boundaries between institutes and disciplines are crossed to create new perspectives and solutions.

SUMMARY:ECDA Insights Social Artificial Intelligence #6
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Max Welz  \n\n\n\nTitle: “Identifying Periods of Careless Responding in Surveys: A Deep Learning Approach” \n\n\n\nAbstract: Rating-scale datasets collected from surveys are paramount to empirical research. However\, due to deficiencies in survey design or lack of motivation\, some respondents may not comply with the instructions of the survey’s questions. This phenomenon is known as careless responding. Careless responding has been identified as a major threat to the internal validity of survey-based studies and should therefore be screened for (Huang et al.\, 2015). Existing methods for detecting careless responses are designed to identify respondents who respond carelessly throughout the survey. However\, recent work suggests that the longer a survey takes\, the higher the likelihood that a large proportion of all respondents will eventually start responding carelessly (Bowling et al.\, 2021). Thus\, we are interested in identifying when a respondent becomes careless (if at all) rather than trying to detect respondents who respond carelessly throughout the survey. Correspondingly\, we propose a novel method for identifying the periods of carelessness (or a lack thereof) of each respondent. The proposed method uses the deep learning technique of auto-associative neural networks (autoencoders) in combination with response times. By means of extensive numerical experiments\, we find that our proposed method achieves high reliability in correctly identifying periods of careless responding and discriminates well between careless and regular respondents. Our method seems to perform particularly well in long surveys\, which are common in psychology and health sciences\, where it is likely that a large proportion of all respondents eventually respond carelessly due to fatigue.

SUMMARY:Recharge Earth
DESCRIPTION:Together towards a new energy system\n\n\n\nRecharge Earth is the platform for professionals involved in the energy transition. A cleaner energy supply involves complex issues that cannot be solved individually. That is why Recharge Earth brought together several parties during the first edition on September 8 and 9. To inspire each other\, share knowledge and jointly explore a new energy future. \n\n\n\nAhmed Aboutaleb\, Mayor of Rotterdam\, opened the congress. During the plenary sessions\, important themes were discussed\, including energy policy\, infrastructure and innovation. Moderator Remco de Boer\, an energy expert himself\, engaged in conversation with CEOs\, policymakers\, professors and other energy experts. And break-out sessions delved deeper into more specific topics\, such as hydrogen\, financing or circular value chains.  \n\n\n\nOn September 7 and 8 2022\, we return with a new edition at the Rotterdam Ahoy Convention Centre.Recharge Earth is a congress focused on solutions. Join us to shape the energy system of the future together! Read more about the program of 2021 and the possibilities to participate as partner or sponsor below. \n\n\n\nNote the program will be mainly in Dutch.
