SUMMARY:Digital for the People - it's more than just tech
DESCRIPTION:Curious about what digital transition means for cities and their citizens? Then join this interactive session to explore how cities can enable it for their development and COVID-19 recovery. Hear from cities what digital transition is all about and what it looks like in practice. Whether you are a cutting-edge smart city or just starting your digital journey\, you can still learn what’s needed to enhance or start digital transition at city level\, and how this works in different contexts and policy areas. \n\n\n\nSession led by URBACT and the city of Valencia. \n\n\n\nFurther\, as part of the EU smart city project RUGGEDISED and in collaboration with the EU SCC-network of smart city projects and the EIP Smart Cities marketplace\, the Erasmus University Rotterdam researched and gathered data from more than 100 respondents in 80 European cities\, most municipality staff responsible for urban data platform development\, and 85% were partners in one of the EU SCC Lighthouse projects\, funded by the European Commission. The study concluded in mid-January 2020.  The study analysed the stage of development on urban data platforms; the vision behind these platforms; the business and technology design; the implementation barriers and accelerators\, and the use and impact of these platforms. This presentation provides the highlights of this study and especially touches upon the human role in achieving value from urban data.

SUMMARY:Conference and Expo 2021: Recharge Earth
DESCRIPTION:View event website & tickets\n\n\n\n\nReduce – Renew – Rethink\n\n\n\nEnergy transition is an important topic. Not only for governments\, companies\, knowledge institutions and service providers\, but for society as a whole. The ambitions and objectives have been defined\, but they still need to take shape. The question is how? How will we achieve (inter)national climate goals? And how do we utilize the economic opportunities that come with it? \n\n\n\nTo answer these questions Rotterdam Ahoy is initiating the Recharge Earth platform which focuses on three topics: reduce\, renew and rethink. In other words\, how can we reduce our climate footprint and reform the current energy system?Recharge Earth brings relevant parties in the field of energy supply and energy transition together\, to further the dialogue between the different thinkers and doers. Because the ultimate goal is to take coordinated action. Achieving objectives and exchange of knowledge will be at the centre.   \n\n\n\nTogether towards a new energy system \n\n\n\nThe energy transition requires a different system approach. The current energy system with its dominant\, large companies and separate economic sectors is no longer sufficient. The challenges are too complex for that. In the new energy system\, consumers can also be producers\, and vice versa. On a large scale\, or on a small scale. Moreover\, balancing supply and demand remains a brain teaser. If you want to design the energy transition successfully and efficiently\, you need to look for a more connected system\, in which relevant stakeholders collaborate much more\, across borders\, in order to jointly achieve sustainable\, integrated solutions. Recharge Earth brings those parties together and inspires to action.  \n\n\n\nRecharge Earth offers one platform that connects all relevant parties. Governments\, network operators\, energy suppliers\, consumers\, knowledge institutions\, innovation hubs\, service providers\, civil society organizations and other stakeholders share knowledge and experiences in order to come up with concrete solutions. Innovation\, practical knowledge exchange\, decisiveness and cooperation will be vital in this. \n\n\n\nTogether we will work on a new energy system!  \n\n\n\nPartners\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe platform\n\n\n\nRecharge Earth is committed to contribute to realizing (inter)national climate goals. By connecting all relevant stakeholders and by sharing knowledge we will be able to find solutions for this global challenge together. We will use different channels to support this. The Recharge Earth platform consists of: \n\n\n\nThe annual Recharge Earth congressRecharge Earth side events: to achieve goals faster initiatives are bundled under the Recharge Earth label for more cohesion. The website where various publications can be found\, such as news items\, whitepapers & best practicesSocial media where knowledge and news are shared\n\n\n\nRecharge Earth congress – March 10 and 11\, 2021\n\n\n\nAn important part of Recharge Earth is the annual congress\, of which the first edition will take place on March 10 and 11\, 2021.  \n\n\n\nThe aim of the congress is to make an active contribution to achieving climate goals and capitalizing on relevant economic opportunities. The conference is set up around a concrete energy challenge: the development of sustainable regions while maintaining and further expanding the economy.  \n\n\n\nTarget audience\n\n\n\nThe energy transition involves complex issues that cannot be solved individually. Only by bringing various groups of stakeholders together\, the new energy system can take shape successfully. Recharge Earth focuses on knowledge exchange between all parties that play a role in the energy transition: \n\n\n\nGovernments: central government\, provinces\, municipalitiesCompanies: energy producers\, network operators\, energy usersKnowledge centres: educational institutions\, research institutes\, innovation hubsService providers: financial\, technical\, legalNon-profit: industry associations\, social organizations\, residents\n\n\n\nIngredients\n\n\n\n1\,000 participants50 exhibitors2 days40 presentations\, workshops and best practices4 plenary timeslotsSite visits\n\n\n\nKey themes\n\n\n\nRecharge Earth offers a challenging program focusing on the following topics: \n\n\n\nFuture energy demand: trends in the industry\, the environment and thegreenhouse horticulture. What is the influence of electrification\, innovation and energy saving?Future energy supply: various renewable energy sources\, such as solar energy\, geothermal and residual heat\, biomass and hydrogen. What is the influence of technology\, innovation and cost reduction? How do we balance the future energy supply with the energy demand? Which infrastructure belongs to a new energy system and how does the role of the involved parties change? How do we keep the new energy system reliable\, affordable\, acceptable and safe?\n\n\n\nThink of regulations\, financing\, education and the labour market\, the use of public space and the needed support of the society.  \n\n\n\nJoin as a sponsor!\n\n\n\nAre you an energy producer\, grid operator\, energy user\, policy maker\, researcher\, energy expert\, service provider\, working for a social organization or involved in some other way in the energy transition? Do you believe in the power of collaboration and do you want to connect your name to Recharge Earth? Register as a sponsor and choose one of the four packages which best suits you.  \n\n\n\nRecharge Earth 2021 Advisory board\n\n\n\nThe Recharge Earth Advisory Board helps us to achieve our objectives by contributing their knowledge\, expertise and experience. The members work in various sectors and form the connection between companies\, knowledge and government. \n\n\n\nMunicipality of Rotterdam: Arno Bonte – Alderman for Sustainability ( t.b.c.)Municipality of Delft: Stephan Brandligt\, Regional Energy Transition Strategy Coordinator and AldermanNetbeheer Nederland: Edwin Edelenbos\, Strategy ManagerECN-TNO: Kees Willemse\, Director International OperationsNVDE: Olof van der Gaag\, DirectorErasmus University Rotterdam: Gerrit Schipper\, Executive Director ECDAEneco: Hans Peters\, CCOCroonwolter & dros: Piet Jan Heijboer\, Chairman of the Board

The seminar series provides a platform for the research\, public\, and private sector to discuss economic\, social\, and technological issues around energy decarbonization\, decentralization and digitization in academia and industry. \n\n\n\nIn the third edition of our Smart Energy Seminar\, we focus on some of the future challenges in micro-grid systems. Our academic and industrial guest speakers will offer their technical\, economic\, and technological insights and potential solutions on how microgrids can deal with these future challenges in a smart and efficient way. Our presenters are: \n\n\n\nStedin – Arjen ZuijerduijnFiran – Haike van de VegteRotterdam School of Management – Mohammad AnsarinSEED-energy – Jean-Luc Picot\n\n\n\nStedin — What is the role of the DSO in the emerging micro grids? This will be clarified by Arjen Zuijderduijn from the Dutch DSO Stedin. During the seminar Arjen will present the learnings of both the residential- as the industrial microgrid pilots. What did the ecosystem learn so far and what is still to learn the coming years? \n\n\n\nFiran — By making better use of the existing electricity grids we can make the Dutch energy system more sustainable. Haike van de Vegte from Firan will discuss how to physically connect solar and wind projects\, large business customers for electricity (such as data centers and hospitals)\, industrial and business sites with complex energy demands\, and cooperatives and other parties that are looking for self-sufficient energy systems. Furthermore\, he will discuss the design of decentralized energy systems including software to monitor and optimize the energy flows within these systems. \n\n\n\nRSM — Pricing electricity for residential users in the renewable energy era cannot follow the same principles as during the fossil fuel era. Mohammad Ansarin from the Rotterdam School of Management discusses the economic consequences of conventional and novel tariff designs for households\, given their increasing ownership of distributed renewable energy systems. We also cover the separate effect of metering infrastructure and how it contributes to the tariff design debate. \n\n\n\nSEED-Energy — develops and markets the ODYSSEY software\, the tool for investment decision making in new energy systems\, like hydrogen or CCU. Jean-Luc Picot will explain and illustrate with case studies\, how ODYSSEY can perform a complete technical-economic feasibility study of a multi-use hydrogen system\, by building a digital twin of the system\, by using dynamic simulation of its operation and AI to optimize sizing and operation. \n\n\n\nTime: November 19th\, 15:00 – 17:00 (CET) \n\n\n\nLocation: ZOOM (the link will be sent to the registered participants) \n\n\n\nFor further questions\, please contact Ivo Carels (i.carels@cleantechdelta.nl).

SUMMARY:Data Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Why should data belong either to a company\, to individuals or to the state? Why shouldn’t an AI-based system have a certain degree of personal independence in order to be placed in the service of society? How can Germany now develop new business models that work on the basis of a controlled handling of data\, but at the same time also provide incentives for innovations? And what role do geopolitical and power-political issues play in connection with the possession of data – especially and currently related to the corona pandemic. How can we advance the construction of a decent data economy and what models of a new democracy can we think of? \n\n\n\nRead more about the event & register here.

SUMMARY:Smart Thermal Grids Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The Erasmus Centre for Data Analytics (ECDA) and Clean Tech Delta (CTD) invite you to the second smart energy webinar\, this time about district heating on Tuesday\, June 9\, 2020. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSmart Energy Seminars \n\n\n\nThe seminar series provides a platform for the research\, public and private sector to discuss economic\, social\, and technological issues around energy decarbonization\, decentralization and digitization in academia and industry. The purpose is to provide a platform to (1) share knowledge\, (2) provide constructive feedback to ongoing research\, and (3) stimulate dialogue across disciplines and sectors. \n\n\n\nDistrict Heating in Rotterdam \n\n\n\nDistrict heating in Rotterdam has been in place for many decades. While it has been primarily supplied by gas-fired generation assets in the past\, a large share of heat is currently provided by waste incineration and readily available waste heat from the harbor area. \n\n\n\nRUGGEDISED is a smart city project funded under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program. It brings together three lighthouse cities: Rotterdam\, Glasgow and Umeå and three follower cities: Brno\, Gdansk and Parma to test\, implement and accelerate the smart city model across Europe. Working in partnership with businesses and research centers these six cities will demonstrate how to combine ICT\, e-mobility and energy solutions to design smart\, resilient cities for all. Through RUGGEDISED\, the Heart of South district in Rotterdam will undergo a serious transition in the upcoming years to prepare the district for the future with the aim to achieve maximum energy efficiency and CO2 reduction while simultaneously looking to have a major social economic impact  in terms of job creation\, levels of participation of citizens and quality of life. \n\n\n\nOne of the smart solutions for the Rotterdam South area consists of a thermal grid connecting large buildings in the Heart of South district\, as well as new parts of the Rotterdam Ahoy exhibition center\, congress center\, hotel and cinema. Heat-cold exchange within one building is commonly used\, but the RUGGEDISED grid will connect all buildings in the Heart of South area and will optimize distribution of heat and cold among buildings. \n\n\n\nSeminar \n\n\n\nDuring the seminar\, four speakers will highlight the topic\, zooming in on progress\, challenges\, insights and innovative solutions. \n\n\n\nAttend \n\n\n\nThe Erasmus Centre for Data Analytics and Clean Tech Delta welcome visitors from academia\, industry and the public sector to join the session for new insights\, fruitful discussions and networking. You can sign up for the seminar here.  \n\n\n\nFor questions regarding the event\, you can reach out to Ayman Esmat. \n\n\n\nSeminar Program \n\n\n\nDuring the webinar\, four speakers will highlight the topic\, zooming in on progress\, challenges\, insights and innovative solutions.
